Generate Video

Install video generation using your selected gateway and storage

Select during creation

npx @chat-js/cli@latest create my-app --yes --video-generation-tool generate-video

Choose the built-in gateway implementation or an external registry item. The built-in tool needs a gateway supporting video models, a configured ai.tools.video.default, and durable file storage.

Installation

In a ChatJS app with registry-based media tools:

npx @chat-js/cli@latest add generate-video

Enable ai.tools.video.enabled and configure its default model in chat.config.ts. You receive tools/chatjs/generate-video/tool.ts, renderer.tsx, and chatjs.json. Sync generates registrations and credential requirements. Fresh apps without video generation receive neither the built-in tool nor its renderer.

Behavior

The built-in tool accepts a prompt, optional aspect ratio, and optional duration. It uploads the result through Files SDK and returns { videoUrl, prompt }. The renderer shows progress, the video player, or a failure message.

Request context supplies the selected model and optional cost accumulator. The tool retains the existing fixed estimate of 50 cents per successful generation. This estimate is not a provider invoice. See Video Generation.

External implementations

npx @chat-js/cli@latest create my-app --yes \
  --video-generation-tool https://example.com/r/video-tool.json

Declare slot: "generateVideo" in registry metadata and the installed descriptor. Export a standard AI SDK tool with your own schemas and optional renderer. Declare provider credentials in envRequirements so the installer and app ask for the selected variables. External tools can use their own provider without a gateway video default. Only one item can occupy this selection.

See Authoring Tools for the shared request context and cost reporting.
